The Peer Court program receives a check for $6,250 from the South Brunswick Islands Rotary Club. The Peer Court at Shallotte Middle School is a pilot program approved and partially funded by the Governor's Crime Commission. Peer Court is an alternative system of justice, which offers first-time offenders between the ages of 11 and 16 an opportunity to admit responsibility for their offenses and receive constructive sentencing from their peers. Student volunteers serve as Prosecuting and Defense Attorneys, Jurors, Bailiffs and Clerk of Court. The only adult actively involved in the court process is the Judge. The Peer Court is beginning its second year of the two-year pilot state program and has far exceeded the expectations of Brunswick County and the State. Peer Court Coordinator Adith Shaw, accompanied by District Attorney Rex Gore, receives the check from SBI President Denny Jordan. Peer Court is administered by the Office of the District Attorney and the Communities In Schools program. The South Brunswick Islands Rotary Club and the Shallotte Rotary Club provide matching funds to the State's grant for the pilot program.
